Apple Acquires HopStop from Nigerian, Chinedu Echeruo for $1.1billion

In a bid to shore up its mobile and Web mapping infrastructure, Apple has confirmed a purchase of Nigerian entrepreneur Chinedu Echeruo‘s (pictured) HopStop.com application. With Google buying the Israel-based Waze map application for a reported $1.1 billion, it has been rumored that HopStop’s acquisition was worth a similar amount. But thus far, Apple has not revealed the terms of the deal.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal’s “All Things Digital” blog, HopStop empowers Apple’s map program by providing access to a portion of the mapping landscape it had yet to cover: mass transit directions. The move has been seen by many analysts as the tech-giant’s largest push to compete with the industry-leading Google Maps service. In fact, Google has been providing map data to Apple since 2007.

As an entrepreneur, Echeruo has founded both HopStop and Tripology, after stints working as an analyst for J.P. Morgan Chase. Echeruo also made his mark in the hedge fund world, working for AM Investment Partners for a time. Echeruo grew up in Eastern Nigeria and was a student at Kings College in Lagos. He later came to the States to attend Syracuse University and Harvard Business School before founding his businesses.

Although the sale of HopStop.com should be lucrative as expected, Echeruo has no intentions of becoming a boardroom fat rat. He is already at work on another small business with a focus on working with companies in his homeland.

HopStop is based in New York and provides door-to-door subway and public transit directions in 140 metropolitan areas in iOS, Android, and web formats. In 2011, it was named one of the top 100 fastest-growing software companies.

A chinese baby is lucky to be alive after a series of stabbing attack from his own mother.

Xiao Bao, an 8-month old baby in China has received over 100 stitches to put his battered face back to normal after his mother stabbed him in Xuzhou city in eastern China.

According to his mother’s confession, baby Xiao was stabbed 90 times after biting her breast during breastfeeding.

The mother and her baby live with an uncle who makes a living recycling garbage.

Xiao Bao’s uncle discovered him lying in a pool of blood in their home yard before rushing him to the hospital.

What a painful experience.

China plans world’s longest Sea Tunnel at $42 billion

China will invest 260 billion yuan, or about $42 billion (27.7 billion pounds), to revive a long-stalled plan to build the world’s longest undersea tunnel across the Bohai Strait linking the country’s eastern and northeastern regions, state media said on Thursday. The 123-km (76.4-mile) tunnel will run from the port city of Dalian in northeastern Liaoning province to Yantai city in eastern Shandong. The report did not say when the project will be completed. China announced plans in 1994 to build the tunnel, at a cost of $10 billion, and set to be completed before 2010. But more than 20 years on, the project remains stuck in the planning stageJapan has the world’s longest undersea tunnel. The 54-km Seikan tunnel links Honshu and Hokkaido islands and started operating in 1988 after more than two decades of construction.

A drug trafficker believed to be the biggest cocaine smuggler in the world was deported back to Italy from Colombia on Saturday after being arrested in a Bogota shopping mall with fake Venezuelan papers.
Roberto Pannunzi, who fled from an Italian prison in 2010, smiled and chatted with officers as he arrived at Rome airport surrounded by Italian police and dressed in a white polo shirt and dark trousers — the same clothes he was detained in, a police video showed.
Referred to by Colombian authorities as the “Pablo Escobar of Italy”, Pannunzi was a member of the Calabrian mafia from southern Italy but had close ties with Colombian and Mexican drug cartels as well as the Sicilian Cosa Nostra.
Police say the 65-year-old Pannunzi, known by his associates as “Bebe” (Baby), organised massive shipments of cocaine from South America to Europe but managed to remain relatively anonymous in the criminal underworld.
“Bebe is not a mafioso, not a killer, Bebe is a broker,” an investigator said
Pannunzi, who has to serve out a 16 and a half year sentence in Italy and was on Interpol’s most wanted list.
“He is the biggest cocaine importer in the world, he is the only one who can organise purchases and sales of cocaine shipments of 3,000 kilos (6,600 pounds) and up,”
“He is definitely the most powerful drug broker in the world,” the lead prosecutor said

Brazilian rapper shot dead on stage while performing (photo + graphic video)

A popular 20 year old Brazilian funk artist/rapper, MC Daleste, was shot dead while performing at a live show last Saturday July 6th in the Brazilian city of Capinas.

According to reports, MC Daleste, whose real name was Daniel Pellegrine, was performing at a public housing project when he was shot in the stomach by at least one bullet from an unknown gunman.

Rapper 50 Cent Sends Abusive Text Messages To Son, Demands Paternity Test

American rapper 50 cent who was arrested few days ago after an alleged fight with the mother of his 16-year-old son, Marquise is yet in another scandal.

The rapper was recently involved in a serious exchange of words with his son.
50 cent allegedly sent 16-year-old Marquise a series of abusive text messages.

In a rant that resembles that of Alex Baldwin’s infamous rude voicemail message to daughter Ireland, 50 cents called his son sh*t head’, ‘motherf***er’ and ‘f***ing stupid.

The rapper also demanded for a paternity test for his son.

Throughout the stream of messages 50 tells his son to cut all contact with him, telling the boy to ‘f*** you stop texting me’ and ‘delete my number.’

The argument was due to Marquise’s refusal to open the door for him when he came for a visit.

Ghanaian Man Planning To Sell Girlfriend’s Head To Ritualists Arrested In Kumasi

A 22-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to sell his girlfriend for ritual purposes. The suspect, Samuel Dadson, had wanted to kill his 21-year girlfriend (name withheld) in Kumasi for him to easily transport the human parts needed for the rituals in Accra.

But the buyer, who was acting on police instruction, told Dadson to personally bring his girlfriend to Accra since it would take away the difficulty of having to transport the human parts of his girlfriend to Accra.

To protect the victim from being killed, the buyer also agreed to pay the GH¢8,000 Dadson had demanded for the human parts of his girlfriend.

On July 3, this year, Dadson arrived with the girl at the VIP Lorry Station in Accra, where he was picked up by the police.

Briefing journalists in Accra yesterday, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Christian Tetteh Yohonu, said Dadson managed to convince her girlfriend, whom he met a month ago, to accompany him to Accra on a business trip.

On July 2, Dadson, who resides in Kumasi, is said to have picked a taxi in Accra and asked a taxi driver to help him to locate a Mallam who could assist him to make ‘quick’ money.

The taxi driver (name withheld) told him that he could lead him to a Mallam at Weija who could perform the rituals for him.

According to Mr Yohonu, Dadson, on July 3, this year, called the taxi driver with the information that he had two human heads and was offering them for GH¢8,000 to any prospective buyer.

Shocked by the news, the taxi driver alerted the police, who then made him to contact Dadson that he has found a buyer.

The buyer asked Dadson to bring the items, including the victim, in the night on the said date to be killed in Accra.

The suspect agreed and said he was cash-strapped and needed GH¢100 to be used as transportation to Accra.

Mr Yohonu said the money was sent to Dadson through MTN mobile money transfer at 2 p.m.

He said Dadson was arrested immediately after he alighted at the VIP lorry station in Accra, in the company of his girlfriend.

Upon interrogation, Dadson is said to have admitted and confessed to the crime.

The suspect and his girlfriend are currently at the regional police command, awaiting further investigations and possible prosecution of the suspect.
